Parent Child Interaction Therapy 40-hour Initial Therapist Training
40-Hour Training:
PCIT is an evidence-based treatment for young children ages 2 year - 6 years, 11 months with behavioral problems. PCIT is conducted through "coaching" sessions during which the parent and child are in a playroom while the therapist is in an observation room observing the parent-child interaction through a one-way mirror and/or live video feed. A "bug-in-the-ear" device is also utilized to allow the therapist to provide in-the-moment coaching related to the parent’s implementation of behavior management skills.
Additionally, PCIT is conducted across two treatment phases. The first phase of treatment focuses on establishing warmth in the parent-child relationship through learning and applying skills proven to help children feel calm, secure in their relationships with their parents, and good about themselves. The second phase of treatment equips parents to manage the most challenging child behaviors while remaining confident, calm, and consistent in their approach to discipline. In this phase, parents will learn proven strategies to help their child accept limits, comply with directions, respect house rules, and demonstrate appropriate behavior in public.
In this training, Participants will learn the guidelines for becoming a certified PCIT therapist and learn the theory driving the program. Next, participants will learn and practice the Dyadic Parent-Child Interaction Coding System (DPICS), demonstrating reliability in coding. Participants will then learn how to teach and coach parents in the Child Directed Interaction (CDI) and Parent Directed Interaction (PDI) portion of the program, demonstrating competency in all areas presented. Finally, participants will learn the criteria for graduating families from PCIT, as well as ethical decision making related to the components of the program. This workshop is designed for professionals who have a master’s degree or higher, or students actively enrolled in graduate school programs in the mental health field.
24 Bi-weekly Consultation Calls:
During the follow-up consultation calls, trainees will receive supervision related to their active cases. These supervision calls will provide a reflective space for supervision questions to be answered, in addition to including didactics related to being a PCIT therapist.
