Parent-Child Interaction Therapy: The Missing Piece in Your Clinical Toolkit

CE Hours 1

About this Workshop

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a behavioral parent training treatment for young children (ages 2 to 6-years 11-months) with emotional and behavioral disorders. The focus of the therapy is to improve the quality of the parent-child relationship and change parent-child interaction patterns. Research has shown statistically and clinically significant improvements in challenging behaviors of preschool age children. PCIT is based on similar theories as other parent training models, but it takes a unique didactic approach to working with families. Parents are taught relationship enhancement or discipline skills that they practice in session and at home with their child. In subsequent sessions, the caregivers receive coaching in the application of the specific therapy skills. This workshop is designed for professionals who have no prior experience with PCIT. During this continuing education event, attendees will learn the principles and evidence supporting PCIT as an evidence-based intervention. Next, they will learn the clinical populations for whom PCIT is most suitable and describe the importance of maintaining fidelity to the PCIT model in order to ensure the effectiveness of the intervention. Finally, participants will be able to define the process for applying and completing PCIT-International certification.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the principles and evidence supporting PCIT (Parent-Child Interaction Therapy) as an evidenced-based intervention
